    Repair & Servicing

Repair and servicing agreements — mobile / electronics repair, AC / refrigerator servicing, furniture repair, computer / laptop servicing, printer / photocopier maintenance, vehicle servicing, home-appliance repair — cover the walk-in and callout repair economy that runs beside every retail product sale in Bangladesh. The distinctive drafting issue here is that the customer hands over their working (or non-working) item to a repairer with no independent way to verify what was actually wrong or what the repairer did — so the written service order / quotation / repair contract is what protects the customer from unauthorised extra work and protects the repairer from 'you broke it worse' allegations.

Stamp & registrationMost repair contracts are governed by the general Contract Act, 1872 and the law of bailment (the repairer takes possession of the customer's goods and owes a duty of reasonable care while they hold them). Warranty on the repair itself (typically 30-90 days on the specific repair carried out) is standard practice in Bangladesh and should be written into the service order. Where the repair involves original manufacturer parts vs generic replacement parts, the contract should say which is being used.

    Frequently asked questions

The repairer wants to charge me for extra work they discovered while opening the item — do I have to pay?
Only if you authorised the extra work in writing (or by a recorded phone call / message) before it was carried out. A good service-order contract makes this explicit: the customer approves a specific scope and a specific price, and any additional work discovered must be re-quoted and re-approved before the repairer proceeds. If the repairer simply carries out extra work without authorisation and then bills for it, the customer's obligation to pay for the unauthorised work is very weak — but the customer will typically still have to pay the agreed scope.
What warranty am I entitled to on a repair?
Whatever the service order says — if it says nothing, the general implied condition under the Sale of Goods Act, 1930 (that any parts supplied are of merchantable quality) applies to the parts, and the general standard of reasonable professional care applies to the workmanship. Most Bangladeshi repair services offer a 30-90 day warranty on the specific work carried out (if the same fault reappears within that window, they will re-fix it free of charge). Ask for that warranty to be written on the service receipt at the time of collection.
